Luís Biscaia about building the future of healthcare software

Creating the software healthcare professionals rely on. Developer Luís Biscaia has been building it for nearly 10 years. Luís joined Sanday in 2016. At the time, he was looking for an opportunity to work abroad, and the Netherlands felt like the right fit. He moved with his family shortly after accepting the role. Although he now lives back in Portugal, Sanday has been part of his story ever since. Today, he’s back in Portugal, continuing his work from the Sanday’s PT office.

Not just coding

As a Developer at Sanday, Luís is not just focused on writing code. He works across the full development process: from understanding user needs to delivering features that are actually used in practice.

Technically, Sanday works with OutSystems. “Everything sits under one umbrella, which helps us move faster and stay involved end-to-end. We also work very close to the business: we don’t just receive tasks, we help decide what actually gets built.”

Small squads and short cycles

“You’re constantly working towards something that goes live quickly. We release every month! That keeps the energy high and the feedback loop short.” Teams work in two-week sprints and release updates monthly.

Projects at Sanday are organized in small, multidisciplinary squads. A typical team consists of two to three developers, a tester, an information analyst and a product owner. Collaboration is key in this setup. “You discuss and improve together. We’re very open. You’re not just passing work along, you’re shaping it as a team.”

Soft skills are just as important

“Soft skills are just as important as technical skills.” According to Luís, being a strong developer at Sanday goes beyond technical expertise. Communication and curiosity are essential.

“You need to stay open and talk to people. Don’t isolate yourself in your work.” With the rise of AI and new tools, the role is evolving. Understanding workflows and working closely with others becomes just as important as coding itself.

At the same time, the product itself adds complexity. Especially because it’s a product for Dutch Healthcare. “Healthcare is a big world. It takes time to really understand the product and the context you’re working in. But that adds extra motivation!”

“What is the culture like?”

“It still feels a bit like university in the best way possible.” The culture at Sanday is open, social and highly collaborative. “We spend time together during work, but also outside of it. Whether it’s lunch, sports or having dinner. We also work from home a lot, which gives you a lot of flexibility.”   “We share a passion for what we do. That’s what connects us.” New colleagues often notice this immediately. “That shared drive, combined with an open way of communicating, creates an environment where people feel comfortable asking questions.”

Feel like a match?

“You won’t just learn from the product, you’ll learn from the people.” After nearly 10 years, Luís still sees plenty of opportunities to grow. Sanday has evolved from a small team into a mature organization, with a strong foundation of knowledge and experience.

“We’ve learned a lot over the years. Sometimes we learned the hard way: what works and what doesn’t. And as a new developer, you benefit from that immediately.”
